Owlet Lodge

Our final birding location was the Abra Patricia (Patricia Pass) area, where we stayed three nights at Owlet Lodge at about 7600′. The lodge is named, yes, after the Long-whiskered Owlet, which can be found here.

In a couple of places these bird signs actually worked. However, there was not a White-faced Nunbird at this spot.

So, about the Long-whiskered Owlet. The first night at Owlet Lodge, we went out into the forest and sat in the rain for a couple of hours without success in calling an owlet into view, although we did hear one. The next night, we returned to Alto Nieva. In order to insure our success on this third try, I left my camera behind. It worked! We got fantastically good looks at a Long-whiskered Owlet—but I got no photos. However, the owlet in this video, which was apparently taken shortly after our trip, might well be the very individual that we saw (it looks exactly like what we experienced):
